Communities Around Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake is a summertime recreational paradise.  The lake is littered with public and private campgrounds, fishing access points and small towns.  Three of the main population centers on Flathead Lake include, Bigfork, Lakeside and Polson Montana.

Bigfork

Bigfork is located on the northeast corner where the Flathead River flows into Flathead Lake.  Bigfork is known for it’s village style community.  The town is made up of art galleries, eateries, taverns and bars, including a whiskey distillery.  Bigfork also boasts a community theater know as the Bigfork Summer Playhouse.  Bigfork is a hub of activity beginning in the spring and continues through August.  It’s western theme and charm is a true Montana destination spot.  Live music fills the air in the summertime village.  However, it’s location invites long peaceful walks on the local trails.  A recommended moderate rated trail near Bigfork is Crater Lake Trail.  It consists of a moderately trafficked 10.8 mile out and back trail.  Along this trail you will enjoy a nice waterfall and is recommended for use from July through October. Dogs are also allowed on trail but  must be kept on leash.

Lakeside / Somers

Lakeside is located on the northwest side of Flathead Lake.  Lakeside location to Flathead Lake ensures easy access to the water.  Lakeside is a popular destination for summer visitors. Recreational opportunities include guided boat tours, boat rentals, hiking, biking and occasional stroll through locally owned shops.   Lakeside has unlimited views of the Swan Mountains as well.

Lakeside hosts Blacktail Mountain Ski Area.  Fresh powder and groomed runs, Blacktail Mountain offers fun skiing for the whole family.  On a clear day from the mountain top you will enjoy panoramic vistas of Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park.  In the summertime Blacktail Mountain contains miles and miles for trails.  From the 9 mile Blacktail Mountain Trail loop to the Foys to Blacktail Trail.  From Blacktail road go 5 miles of Lakeside and look for the trailhead sign on your right.  There is limited parking and a pit toilet available.

Polson

Polson Montana is located on the southern half of Flathead Lake on the Flathead Indian Reservation.  Due to its location on the reservation a tribal permit is required for hiking and biking trails in the Mission Mountain Range.  Polson hosts many events during the summer months.
